Everything You Know About Autism Is Wrong
I was shocked myself this year when I realised how little I know about people on the Spectrum.
I had this idea they all loved Facts and Figures, and couldn’t be Fascinated by Fiction.
Which led to my diagnosis, but this isn’t about me.
This heading was actually the title of a TedX talk (below), from an Australian researcher at Macquarie Uni, Dr Jac den Houting.
Most of this post is almost direct quotes of her research and eloquent words.
Scary Shocking Stats
Autism research funding in Australia over the last ten years:
>40% genetic and biological research, why it happens, can we prevent it
20% treatments, how to make Autistic people act a bit less weird
7% investigating services to help autistic people
Why does this matter?
2% Population are Autistic
60% autistic adults are under or unemployed
87% of us have mental illness
We are Nine times more likely than the general population to die by suicide
We have an average life expectancy of just 54 years
We Deserve Better

It conceptualises autism as a problem to be solved, a disorder, not as a condition to live with. That we have deficits.
The current medical paradigm seems wrong.
