I’ve been re-reading, well re-listening to what I think is an awesome HP fanfic… that went slightly overboard.
It got so popular amongst it’s fans, that way before it was finished, some of them began making it into podcast and audiobook…
then, partway through, they decided to make it a full cast audiobook with fans reading it.
When they caught up with the author in his writing, then they went back to beginning and re-recorded at better quality and gear.
A Simple Premise…
Prehistory: Petunia is so distressed by her perceived poor appearance and the fact that the only man who pays her attention is a fat man called Vernon Dursley and that he intends to name his first son Dudley Dursley.
While Lily Evans is still at Hogwarts, Petunia begs her for years for help, and finally persuades her to prepare a dangerous potion which changed her significantly from who we know, with a corresponding improved relationship with Lily. This lead to
” Petunia Evans has married a professor for biochemistry and the two of them are raising young Harry in a loving, strongly academic environment. As a result, Harry is inquisitive, precocious and fascinated by science and science fiction. When he finds out that he is a wizard, he tries to apply scientific principles to his study of magic, with sometimes surprising results.”
This puts a very different spin on everything in
Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
Imagine a Potterverse without plot holes (well, so many), written by someone with perhaps deeper understanding of Psychology, logic, rationality and the scientific method.
Of course there are some new problems, and a large fan fic was produced haphazardly chapter by chapter and sub-chapter.
It is has been mentioned widely and there are many detractors too.
Who Magazine in an article titled “10 Harry Potter Fanfics That You Should Read Right Now”
Ranked it Number One and said:
“Widely considered as one of the best fanfics ever written, Methods Of Rationality tells the story of a very different Harry Potter. While most of the people and goings-on stay the same, Harry himself is a no-nonsense Ravenclaw that’s about to learn how to break magic with a little Muggle science. The result is a familiar yet all-new take on the Wizarding world.”
“Oh, come now, Harry. Really, magic? Magic is just about the most unscientific thing there is!”
Professor Michael Veres-Evans [Yes he took Evans to be part of his name!]
Harry at age eleven may not have an Inner child but he apparently has an inner Hufflepuff, Griffendor, and worryingly, and inner Dark Side, the Inner Slytherin. He regularly has interesting conversations with each of these personas, and a whole lot more happens in his first year at Hogwarts.
And Beyond…
There is something approaching a cult following of this book, and it’s author.
It spawned not just sequels from other people, but fan-fics of HPMOR itself, and it has also created a new sub-genre Rationalist Fanfiction where people have rewritten other works from My Little Pony and Frozen through to Terminator and Twilight.
I haven’t gone there yet though!
Well it all feels very logical to my Autistic logical brain, but I have to admit though I started reading it online, I succumbed to the podcasts and now audiobook version, and perhaps have glossed over some of the flaws. I thoroughly enjoyed it though, a number of times 😀
A standard family rule is that the family can never walk past a new bookstore without going in!
I wish that had been in my family.
